The Rebbe on the Holocaust and the problem of suffering. Across the letters the answer he gives is, strikingly, not an answer — it is a redirection: from why did this happen to what must be built now.

Roughly 155 genuine letters on the collective Shoah response and personal consolation (of 226 marker-hits; "decree" in Hebrew is a false friend that catches unrelated rulings). 163 mention survivors. The signature is "the answer is not an answer": to Wiesel — the true war on Hitler is to build, marry, and have children; memory is only half, the greater half is to act; and what the Shoah refuted was humanism, not faith. The question has no answer but silence — yet leaves faith stronger.

The thread runs in two registers. To the survivor and the people, he speaks of the Shoah as a whole — and turns almost at once from mourning to building. To the mourner and the questioner, he answers the ancient problem of suffering — and, just as pointedly, declines to explain it. Its weight sits not in frequency but in a handful of profound letters, several of them to Elie Wiesel.
